Bamboo weaving has more than two thousand years of history in China — baskets, trays and boxes split and woven from a single culm, the weave itself the structure, no nails or glue holding it together. This handmade woven bamboo basket is made from bamboo split into strips under two millimetres wide, with a double arching handle, then wiped with raw lacquer coat after coat until the color deepens and the weave still shows through.

The upturned rim and gently hollowed center are shaped by how the weave is tightened and released as it goes — the arc lives in the weaving, not in a press. A tray takes two to three days to weave. It carries fruit, bread, letters and small things; the handle is for lifting it through the house, not for heavy loads.
